Published 14th Dec 2017 by https://www.mycci.co.uk/

Do you want to win up to £5,000 worth of legal support and mentoring for your new or early-stage business? Apply now for the 2018 Business Advantage Awards, run by Leeds Beckett University and solicitors Lupton Fawcett.

Now in their fourth year, the Business Advantage Awards are open to students and graduates of Leeds Beckett (within five years of graduation) and clients of the University’s Business Centres in Leeds, Wakefield and Halifax.

Five Business Advantage Awards are on offer, with each providing up to 50 hours of mentoring and/or legal support. Award winners will also have access to one-on-one mentoring support from a Lupton Fawcett solicitor with expertise in fields such as Intellectual Property, employment law, taxation and premises legal support.

Application forms are available at http://bit.ly/BAA2018 For more information, and to submit your application, please contact universitybusinesscentres@leedsbeckett.ac.uk or call 0113 281 6770. The deadline for entries is Tuesday 27 February 2018. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to give a 10-minute presentation on their business to a panel on Tuesday 27 March 2018.

In the last 3 years, 16 businesses have benefitted from the Awards.

Award winner, Zainah Khan, completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Leeds Beckett in May 2016 and launched her private therapy practice and corporate mental strength training programme that summer. Zainah's business, Chakra Corporate Mental Strength Ltd, is designed to increase resilience to stress and destigmatise mental health issues in corporate workplaces using psychotherapy tools.

Zainah said: "Receiving the Business Advantage Award has been of huge significance in relation to the progress of Chakra Corporate Mental Strength Ltd. The award money has been massively useful in understanding and working through the legal issues involved with the business. Aside from registering the business as a Limited Company, I have been able to gain an understanding of trademarking and completed the terms of business for my clients, including legalities involved with my website. This would have been costly and time-consuming had I done it without the support of Lupton Fawcett.

"My mentor, Jonathan Oxley, arranged for me to present Chakra's stress-resilience programme to their Director-level staff which was a wonderful experience and very rewarding. The feedback gained from this was very positive and gave me a huge boost of confidence to secure more work in the future with other clients. Jonathan has also done a video testimonial for me following the session."

Kirstie Frenneaux, University Business Centre Programme Manager at Leeds Beckett, said ‘’We are delighted that Lupton Fawcett are again able to support our Business Advantage Awards which provide an invaluable opportunity for some of our young businesses to access crucial legal support in the early stages of their development. We have seen what a difference this support can make to the companies that we have worked with in the past and we are really looking forward to being able to help a new cohort this year."

Lupton Fawcett has worked in partnership with Leeds Beckett for a number of years with the Business Advantage Awards; and a new agreement will see them offering free legal clinics, workshops and advice to businesses located in the University Business Centres. These centres provide a space for any business to base themselves and access additional onsite support to help them grow. Services start from just £35.00 per month.

Jonathan Oxley, Director at Lupton Fawcett’s Leeds-based corporate team and Mentor for the scheme, added: "We are delighted to sponsor the awards for a third year, and very much look forward to supporting some more of the great businesses coming out of the University and its Business centres."
