Council-backed ‘6C’ helps local manufacturer cut energy bills

Published 9th Feb 2016 by Rebecca Walker

The ‘6C’, launched by Calderdale Council and Elland-based member and energy broker Orchard Energy, has projected savings of approximately £225,000 over two years for Halifax-based car parts manufacturer Metaldyne.

Metaldyne, which belongs to the Metaldyne Performance Group, a global leader in the supply of parts to the automotive industry, specialises in the supply of low volume requirements and the designing, manufacture and repair of viscous dampers for niche engine markets. In its 50 year long history the company has supplied parts to a valued portfolio of customers including Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Mercedes and BMW.

Metaldyne was spending a significant sum on its electricity and gas bills - approximately £520k per year, and having joined the 6C scheme will benefit from a 22% reduction in energy costs per annum. The 6C scheme has been specifically designed for Calderdale businesses and brings local companies together that want to reduce their overheads and play an important part in improving their local environment.

Matthew Sykes, Maintenance Leader & EHS Coordinator at Metaldyne, said: “We enlisted the help of 6C after hearing about Orchard Energy’s expertise in securing large refunds and its good customer service.

“The 6C scheme appealed to us because we were able to enter into a cooperative with other like-minded local businesses. Even though we’re part of a global business, we look after our own utility bills at our Halifax site and through the 6C scheme we can benefit in a number of ways including automatic entry into the Council’s environmental business awards scheme.

“The process of signing up was straightforward and hassle-free and the savings will help towards the company’s overall savings targets. The automotive industry is intense and there is a low profit margin so it will help the bottom line significantly.”

Dru Widdowson, new business executive at 6C and Orchard Energy, said: “We have a good track record of reducing energy costs for our companies and in particular can help the many manufacturers in Calderdale like Metaldyne, who are heavy energy users, reduce their overheads through proactive purchasing and quality energy reduction guidance.

“We are experts in forward purchasing and securing the very best prices for our clients and look forward to signing up our next 6C customer.”
