Wakefield Council has been awarded ‘Local Authority of the Year’ at the Insider Yorkshire Property Industry Awards 2015 by the property and development industry.
The Council scooped the top award for its work to support development, drive growth and aid commercial operators to complete developments across all sectors.
Accepting the award at the ceremony last night (Thursday 24 September) in Leeds, Wakefield Council’s Chief Executive Joanne Roney OBE said: “I am delighted that Wakefield’s achievements have been recognised. We have a superb track record of leading the delivery of major developments, like The Hepworth, Trinity Walk and Merchant Gate. In the last financial year we secured £207m of private sector investment and created over 900 jobs as a result of inward investment activity.
“These successes would not have happened without the political leadership of the Council under Cllr Peter Box CBE to make economic development and regeneration a strategic priority for the Council.
“We have a clear vision for sustainable economic growth and job creation and we are determined to put Wakefield on the map as a vibrant and dynamic region.”
Beating off stiff competition from Sheffield City Council and Leeds City Council the judges felt that “Wakefield has overcome significant competition from neighbouring authorities” and praised Wakefield Council for having “a very good year with schemes like the Wakefield Eastern Relief Road and securing investment for a new 1.3m sq ft TK Maxx distribution centre.
The Yorkshire Property Industry Awards were hosted by Insider Media, the UK’s leading regional business to business media company.
The event was held at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and brought together almost 500 of the top developers, investors, architects and advisers from across the region.
