Business people urged to help give aspiring entrepreneurs a helping hand

Published 1st Jul 2014 by Stephen Naylor

Business people from across West Yorkshire are being encouraged to sign up to give some of their time and expertise to help aspiring entrepreneurs start their companies.

The MYMentor network of business mentors, who work with those placed onto the New Enterprise Allowance to develop and then launch their own firms, is recruiting new volunteer mentors.

Individuals are asked to spare at least one hour a fortnight to guide someone as they write their business plan and support them during their first 26 weeks of trading.

A special event to showcase the work of the MYMentor network, open to anyone interested in joining the scheme, is to take place this month.

The MYMentor evening will be held at Kirklees College’s Huddersfield base on Tuesday 15 July at 6.30pm. More details, and how to sign up, can be found at http://mymentor.eventbrite.com.

Claire Young is now an ambassador for the MYMentor network and will speak at the event about the importance of mentors to her:

“Since day one of working at L’Oreal, I have used a mentor and have always found them invaluable for bouncing ideas off, discussing career progression, or asking for help. Business is a learning curve and it is sometimes nice to have someone to hold your hand - or offer a box of tissues.

“After taking part in BBC One’s The Apprentice, I became my own boss and have actively sought support from a range of different mentors. Sometimes people say that asking for help is a sign of weakness - I disagree and think it is the total opposite. As an entrepreneur you learn to use all resources available to you to your advantage.”

Carl Hopkins is also an ambassador for the MYMentor network and will talk about how he’s encouraging fellow business people to sign-up to the scheme:

“Mentors have been hugely important to so many business people’s careers and it’s only right we now support future entrepreneurs by giving them the guidance we received when we were starting out.

“I hope anyone interested in mentoring will come along to the event to hear about the MYMentor network and how it helps turn business dreams into reality.
