Elland based member company Suma Wholefoods was recently visited by Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls, during Fairtrade Fortnight, to see how they support their workers.

Suma is the UK’s largest independent wholefood wholesaler/distributor, specialising in vegetarian, fairly traded, organic, ethical and natural products.

Suma practise an equal pay cooperative whereby all members of staff receive the same wage across the board, regardless of position.

When asked Ed commented “Clearly this is something that is working really well though I am certainly not going to say that it is a model that is going to work for all businesses,” he said. “What we want in the economy is people who innovate and try things and challenge conventional wisdom.”
