We’re geared up for the largest single free event in the world due to come to Yorkshire this summer –Yorkshire's Grand Départ and Tour de France.
To hear more, I attended an event whereby Anne-Marie Parker from Kirklees Council explained the facts about the event and information for businesses to be aware of.
The event begins its Yorkshire journey Saturday 5th July and will make its way through Mid Yorkshire on Sunday 6th July. The Tour De France expects around 100,000 visitors in our region with around 50,000 alone heading for Holme Moss.
Traffic management will begin from midnight on Saturday 5th July with no travel on the route from 8.00am Sunday morning and no parking on the route for three days. If you are up early enough to benefit from a good spot to watch the race, first you’ll see the race Caravan, a procession of elaborate floats and vehicles that precedes the racing action. The 180 vehicles distribute promotional items to fans at the roadside. This will be followed by the race itself. The main group of riders is known as the peloton.
Businesses are eligible to benefit from one off special licenses at £50 for street trading throughout the event (Wednesday-Sunday) but you need to let the council know if you are planning on trading as soon as possible.
If you have land, it may also be a viable option to open a camping site which member The Lazy Camper are doing with one of the best spots in Holme Moss. The council will help you promote camping, car parks, accommodation and anything of interest that businesses have to offer.
But be warned, officials are very protective over branding of the event and Anne-Marie advises businesses to visit http://letour.yorkshire.com for rules around the use of the branding.
For more information on plans for the Tour de France this summer; how road closures and disruption may affect your business; and how to make the most of the one million plus visitors expected each day in Yorkshire, why not attend Kirklees Council’s business roadshows coming to member and patrons the John Smith’s Stadium 7.30pm Tuesday 1st April.
You can also attend a business roadshow at 7.00pm, Thursday 3rd April, The Huntsman, Holmfirth.
