Brandon Medical, a Leeds based member and medical technology specialist, is celebrating after being crowned winners in The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM) Awards 2013.

Brandon Medical has been chosen in the ‘Best Innovative Product’ category for their Symposia® digital operating theatres. The award seeks to highlight organisations that have identified new products and successfully brought them to market.

Symposia® is a fully integrated tele-video system for healthcare using an IP-based open-technology platform. This allows full integration with any medical video source including endoscopes, images from ultra sound, digital X-ray, MRI, CT and medical video cameras with an integrated control & communications system.

Symposia® digital operating theatres are of particular interest for medical training and are also low enough cost that even the smallest healthcare institutions can have full connectivity. This allows universal telemedicine for the first time.

It allows medical professionals live interaction with surgeons in operating theatres. The technology provides a tool for knowledge sharing including surgical skills best practice, tele-monitoring, medical lectures and communication between multi disciplinary teams.

Symposia® revolutionises the way surgeons are taught allowing the transference of skills from the classroom, to real surgical environments. The IHEEM is an international professional engineering institute, specialising in the healthcare sector.

Founded in 1943 IHEEM’S primary purpose is to keep its members up to date with developing technology and regulations. Graeme Hall, Managing Director at Brandon Medical commented: “It’s a great honour for Brandon Medical to receive this award from the IHEEM and that Sypmosia® has been recognised by such a knowledgeable body. The potential for Sypmosia® is vast and by no means do we think it has reached its potential. It will continue to enhance the way we teach; allowing trainee surgeons to ‘up-skill’ learn techniques more effectively. It will also allow clinical staff to work in new ways and bring advanced technology into their every day working lives”.
