Tecaid UK In Innovative New Partnership With THIS

Published 10th Sep 2013 by Rebecca Greenhough

It’s been all systems go since the launch of Tecaid UK in May with Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman and Forget-Me-Not Children’s Hospice CEO Peter Branson.

Tecaid UK is a community interest company (CIC) selling donated electronic devices at affordable prices for people on low incomes and using its surplus to fund local charities (currently the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in Huddersfield). Their aims also include creating training, volunteering and employment opportunities while promoting reuse as the most sustainable form of recycling.

The most significant development so far, according to Tecaid UK’s Managing Director Yvonne Hutchinson, is an innovative new partnership with The Health Informatics Service (THIS). THIS is an Information Management and Technology provider hosted by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.

"The partnership with THIS is exactly the kind of partnership we hoped for when we drew up the business plan. In fact it’s perfect!" says Yvonne. "The NHS is an institution and a brand that people trust."

The social enterprise which desperately needed new accommodation has been offered office space, a regular donation of devices and staff volunteer time to carry out repairs by staff from The Health Informatics Service.

Yvonne, who has had a diverse career in social housing regulation, international development and formerly chaired the Ferndale Residents Association, where the hospice is based, said "THIS has really caught the vision and seen the potential for significant social impact. There’s something very exciting about working with people who share your passion, vision and rigour, that’s when you can really make things happen in a dynamic and sustainable way."

John Rayner, Director of The Health Informatics Service said "We are delighted to be working with Tecaid UK, Yvonne Hutchinson has provided us with a significant opportunity to help people less fortunate than ourselves. We welcome this partnership and will be looking for ways to encourage other NHS colleagues to do likewise"
