It was strawberries and fizz for friends, clients and contacts who celebrated the 25th anniversary of Riley & Co with an afternoon of bowling.
|Simon Walton, tax director, explained that Angela Riley had started the business on her own, with no staff or premises 25 years ago, and that with good fortune and a lot of hard work the business had progressed to its present standing with excellent clients and a wonderful team of staff.
|He thanked them all for their continuing support and hard work. Guests included Yvette Ruddock who had flown over from the Isle of Man and was one of Angela’s earliest employees, and Andrew Choi from Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.
Intrepid bowlers played the first few rounds of the knock-out competition in the rain but the weather cleared and the later rounds were in full sunshine.
The winners Peter Denton and Norma Branch, volunteers from the Maurice Jagger Centre, beat Bernie Wilson (Riley & Co) and Mike Shaw (Wilby Ltd) 7-1 in the final.
"Peter & Norma white-washed me and my partner Ken Mawdsley (Tenons) 9-0 in the first round," said Angela.
|"They are star bowlers and well deserved to win the trophy. We have been overwhelmed with messages of goodwill and congratulations, so we thank everyone who has supported us and wished us well."
The raffle raised nearly £300 for the Community Foundation for Calderdale which Steve Duncan from the Foundation was present to collect.
The evening finished with a supper laid on by the staff from Elland C & B Club.
Angela added: "It was a very enjoyable afternoon and both the catering and the venue were superb. Some of the attendees had never bowled before, so maybe a few will be taking up the sport or possibly joining us again next year if we give it another go."
