Hours: 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday (plus additional hours as and when required to attend networking and events)

Role: The Chamber’s mission is to drive growth among businesses of all sizes and sectors across the Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield districts by providing relevant and valuable support and benefits to members. The Head of Commercial Services and Membership will be responsible for driving sales to increase membership, managing communications with members and promoting benefits to members through regular marketing and events activity. The role is supported by the Membership, Marketing & Events Team and shall include leadership ,management and developing the growth strategy of that team and the Chamber.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Membership

  • Manage and oversee all membership activity;
  • Increase membership of the Chamber, with support from the Membership Sales staff
  • Develop and implement a sales plan, including identification of potential members to method of first contact;
  • Develop and implement a sales funnel procedure, from first point of contact (networking, marketing, events, cross departmental promotion) to appropriate follow up contacts, to successfully recruit new members;
  • Ensure good internal communications so that potential new member information is shared within the Membership, Marketing and Events Team and is received from other departments, such as Export Hub.
  • Manage the Membership Sales Coordinator;
  • Develop and implement procedures to increase retention of members;
  • Liaise with members on a regular basis and deal with membership queries from potential and existing members;
  • Follow up membership resignations and produce reports on why memberships lapse;
  • Oversee administration of the CRM system, with support from the Marketing Administration Assistant;
  • Develop and maintain good relations with patrons and commercial partners of the Chamber;
  • Recruit new patrons and commercial partners of the Chamber as and when required;
  • With support from the Marketing Administration Assistant, conduct market research with potential and existing members to determine the value of existing membership benefits and to identify potential new benefits that may be offered.

Marketing

  • Oversee all marketing, promotional and public relations activities working with external providers
  • Mange the relationships between external PR and Marketing providers, agreeing suitable targets and contractual terms
  • Develop and manage the Chamber’s Communication Plan, including development of a 12-month schedule of regular communications about membership benefits, events and policy consultation (including the Quarterly Economic Survey);
  • Adapt the Chamber’s Communication Plan as and when required to include ad-hoc communications containing information relevant to members;
  • Prepare copy for use in delivering the Chamber’s Communication Plan, including but not limited to email promotion of membership benefits and events, communications surrounding policy consultation exercises and the Quarterly Economic Survey, and press releases;
  • Oversee the distribution of press releases, media alerts and other announcements to gain positive media attention for the Chamber, chamber programs and community;
  • Develop and maintain good relations with local press and media outlets;
  • Develop and manage the Chamber’s Social Media Schedule, including scheduling social media posts on membership benefits, events and policy consultation;
  • With support from the Marketing Administration Assistant, prepare content for social media posts in line with the Chamber’s Social Media Schedule and for live posts as and when required;
  • Manage the Marketing Administration Assistant;
  • Update and maintain information on the Chamber’s website, including new member information, changes to member information, benefits, events and news;
  • Attend non-Chamber networking events, trade shows and exhibitions to represent and promote the Chamber.

Events

  • Manage all events activity, including networking, training and policy-based events;Develop and manage the Chamber’s Events Plan, including development of a 12-month schedule of events;
  • With support from the Events Assistant, book venues for events a minimum of three months in advance and update the Events Plan;
  • With support from the Events Assistant, book speakers for events a minimum of three months in advance and update the Events Plan;
  • Manage the Events Assistant;
  • Set attendance targets for events and promote events to ensure attendance targets are met;
  • Set profit targets for events, monitor costs and bookings, and ensure that profit targets are met;
  • Attend events to oversee on the day delivery, represent the Chamber and network with potential and existing members, patrons and commercial partners;
  • Lead coordination and management of the MY Business Conference events (Kirklees and Wakefield) and MY Annual Dinner event, including booking venues, speakers and entertainment (as appropriate), managing the business plan and budget, selling exhibition space/tables and on the day coordination.

Management

  • Ensure all plans/ schedules reflect the current needs of the membership and support the Chamber’s mission statement and long-term strategies;
  • Review and amend plans/schedules as appropriate and provide reports on membership, marketing and events activity as and when required;
  • Manage the Membership, Marketing and Events Team budget and provide reports on budget and expenditure and return on investment as and when required;
  • Line manage the Membership, Marketing & Events Team, including conducting appraisals, managing performance, building strong team work ethics and communication within the team.
  • Support the Membership Committee with appropriate reports and papers
  • Take responsibility for Accreditation by BCC and the Annual Benchmarking.
  • Provide management information to quarterly board meetings

Person Specification:

Essential

  • Experience in developing and managing strategies and activity;
  • Experience in managing and promoting events;
  • Line management experience;
  • Excellent report writing skills.;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, content management systems and social media platforms;
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple projects and work to deadlines and in a pressured environment;
  • Strong communications and public relations skills, coupled with the ability to influence others in a positive manner;
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with others;
  • Strong commercial background
  • Experience of working with the public sector
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Business or marketing related degree or equivalent professional qualification;
  • Driving licence and access to own car for business use;
