A team of 35 from Wesco Aircraft, an aerospace hardware distributor near Huddersfield will be participating on May 12th 2012 in the Keswick to Barrow Walk (The K2B) with the intention of raising over £15,000 for charity. The Keswick to Barrow Walk is a 40 mile sponsored team stroll through some of the country’s finest landscapes. Three teams of walkers will be testing themselves on a challenging route starting on the southern side of the Lake District town of Keswick and winding its way through some of the most beautiful scenery to the Victorian town of Barrow in Furness on the coast of the Irish Sea. Wesco participate in a significant charity challenge each year in memory of deceased colleague Paul Shirtliff.

Wesco are committed to fully supporting employees during this challenge. Event organiser Joanne King commented "The discipline and commitment shown by Wesco employees is fantastic , our teams are training hard to meet required fitness levels needed to complete this challenge and their dedication to accomplishing this is certainly something to be proud of".

The walk supports various local charities in the Lake District and along with these we will be supporting our chosen charity Cancer Research UK which is a very worthy cause and one close to our hearts at Wesco.

In 2009 Wesco lost a valuable and much loved employee when Paul Shirtliff lost his fight to cancer.

Paul joined Wesco in Sept 1997 and worked in a number of roles within Sales and Contracts, his latest one was Contract Projects Manager. His technical knowledge of Wesco was second to none, but more importantly he knew what Wesco was about in a people sense. It was this approach to Wesco which made him a very popular person with both his Wesco colleagues and our Customers.

Prior to Wesco Aircraft, Paul was a professional footballer who played as a defender in The Football League for Sheffield Wednesday and Northampton Town, along with a career in some smaller clubs.
Paul was diagnosed with a brain tumour and after two significant operations and aggressive chemo-therapy to halt this disease Paul sadly lost his battle on 13th September 2009.

Wesco recognises the importance of holding an event such as this, losing a colleague, it was important for employees to feel they could do something in his memory; everyone was keen to support Cancer Research UK.

Graham Capell, Director of Wesco Aircraft commented "As an employer, the health and wellbeing of our employees is fundamental to our business and we encourage our people to be healthy and fit. The determination of our teams and the support of all employees across the business has been remarkable, if in addition to this we can achieve our goal of raising £15,000 for Cancer research in memory of Paul, the hard work will be worthwhile."
